Scholarship or cadet programmes normally require candidates to undergo pilot aptitude testing. These tests are also available privately and recommended for those who aim to undertake training independently – a worthwhile first step at the beginning of the process.

Professional pilots will need to pass a “class one” medical fitness assessment through an approved aviation medical examiner which is also recommended prior to undertaking training.  Do not be dissuaded if you wear corrective lenses as this is perfectly acceptable for civil aviation. 

An aeronautical degree can be tied into the CPL, but it’s not a requirement and will have its own application criteria. Some employers may require a degree in addition to flying credentials although this is less common in Hong Kong.  Other than a good fallback option, holding a degree, even if independent from aviation can be beneficial for promotion and managerial roles. 

Previous flying experience if any can be credited towards the next higher licence.
